Enlargement of the pulmonary artery is fairly easy to recognize on the PA chest x-ray by a bulging along the left cardiac border just below the aortic arch . Pulmonary artery enlargement can be due to a number of causes, but probably the three most common are pulmonic stenosis (with poststenotic dilatation), pulmonary artery hypertension, and abnormalities in which increased flow through the pulmonary artery occurs, such as a patent ductus arteriosus or an atrial septal defect (ASD).
